Dr Anna Klenert

PhD, MSc, BA, PGCE, PgCert (Coaching)

Dr Klenert is a dedicated career and leadership coach with over 25 years of developing leaders for the professional work setting. Her award-winning PhD coaching research focuses specifically on understanding socio-cultural barriers and enablers in an African context, and how these can be overcome or used effectively in accelerating leaders in the workplace. The approach she uses, provides contextually tailored coaching that addresses challenging intersectional barriers between personal aspirations and dynamic societal norms and traditions.  She has developed a collective coaching practice framework to address socio-cultural barriers. She is a coach practitioner and a certified systemic constellations mapping coach. She is a leadership development academic with experience of working internationally and in Zambia.

She is a Senior Lecturer in leadership development at Oxford Brookes University and teaches on postgraduate university provision on Masters and MBA programmes focusing on leadership capabilities for diverse industries. She has five years’ experience directing a university and industry mentoring programme designed to support the employability of graduates transitioning into the workplace.

The CAL approach uses African-sensitive coaching principles backed by research, such as storytelling, narratives and systemic constellations and promotes the following principles:

  • Sensitivity to societal context:Understanding African leaders’ worldviews by recognising the societal norms and traditions they navigate
  • Appropriate alignment: Ensures the coaching process respects and acknowledges how cultural traditions can help or hinder leadership barriers when leading others
  • Authentic leadership: Coachees are encouraged to be their true selves, ensuring career choices are genuine and effective while balancing traditions with modern leadership practices.
  • Holistic growth and development: The coaching process values personal, professional and community influences, recognising that success comes from acknowledging and nurturing all these aspects
